Health Care Reform
NEWS ALERT - PUBLIC OPTION RESURGENCE!!

Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado has led the charge in resurrecting the Public Option in the Health Care Reform fight.  20 Senators have now signed on to a letter written by Bennet, urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pass a public option via reconciliation, which does not need Republican support.

As of February 20th, neither Senators Tom Carper nor Ted Kaufman have signed this letter.  Please contact them immediately and urge them to sign the Bennet letter. Support is swelling in the Senate and now is the time to make our voices heard.

A major legislative focus of NASW, has been passage of the
Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act
The purpose of this Bill is to establish a Commission to develop long-term recommendations and strategies to maximize the ability of social workers to serve clients effectively, with appropriate training, expertise and care. The Commission will advise Congress and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on policy issues associated with the profession of social work, to support recruitment and retention of social workers, as well as research and reinvestment in the profession.

As of 2/1/10, the Senate bill, sponsored by Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), had 12 cosponsors (Democrats).  The House bill, sponsored by Edolphus Towns (D-NY 10th) had 81 cosponsors (Democrats). NASW national is putting a significant amount of resources into moving these bills out of committee to a full vote in the House and Senate.

We would like to urge you to contact Senators Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman, as well as Representative Mike Castle, and urge them to support his important piece of legislation.
